what to do in west Cornwall
There is something for everyone near Dove Meadows!
Whether you like to spend your holiday relaxing or need to keep yourself busy all day, then there are countless things to do near to Dove Meadows in Marazion.
All the places mentioned on our site are within easy reach by car or public transport – a bus stop is just a five minute walk to the end of our lane.
Cycling
The National Cycle Network Route 3 passes right by Dove Meadows, giving easy access to Penzance and the Land’s End peninsula as well as to Hayle, St Ives and the north coast. If you can’t bring your own bicycle, then bike hire is available less than a mile away from Lands End Cycle Hire.
Walking
The South West Coast Path stretching from Portland in Dorset to Minehead in Somerset is one of the UK’s most spectacular walks. By staying at Dove Meadows, you are just a five minute walk from joining the path at Marazion. Some fantastic views and sights are accessible from the coast path in west Cornwall. Visit the official website for more information.
On the water…
If you love the water then west Cornwall is the place to be. Lessons for kitesurfing and the new, much calmer activity of Stand Up Paddleboarding are available from Ocean High off the beach at Marazion and good surf beaches can be found at nearby Praa Sands and Gwithian on the north coast. Marazion is also home to the Mount’s Bay Sailing Club and Mount’s Bay Pilot Gig Club. The sea itself is relatively warm in Mount’s Bay, partly due to the gently sloping nature of the beaches.
On the beach…
If you prefer to spend your holiday relaxing on a beach, then Marazion is the perfect destination! Our beaches are clean, safe and patrolled by lifeguards through the summer months and, given that many people come to the town to just see St Michael’s Mount, are relatively quiet on a lovely August day!
The arts and festivals
St Ives is the artistic hub of the area and home to many galleries. The Minack Theatre, carved from a cliff near Porthcurno, offers possibly the UK’s most spectacular backdrop to any stage performance. Penzance hosts an annual week-long festival – Golowan – with many events to attend as well as the Mazey Day processions. There is also Penzance Literary Festival held every July and the St Ives September Festival.
For the kids…
As well as beach, rockpool and family fun, there is plenty of entertainment for your children in the area. For rainy days, soft play fun is available at Paradise Park in Hayle (also home to a fabulous wildlife sanctuary) and One-to-Eleven in Helston (running alongside Flambards Theme Park). There are also various free play parks including a very good facility on the front at Marazion.
Other ideas for the kids include Coast 2 Coast Karting at St Erth, Poldark Mine and Geevor Mine to experience the life of a tin miner underground; and Country Skittles at nearby Townshend.
There really is plenty for you and your family to enjoy in the Penzance and west Cornwall areas during a stay at Dove Meadows.
